St Michael's Church

St Michael's sits on the western edge of the village, 735 feet up with fine views of Dartmoor, approached from the lych gate along an impressive avenue of lime trees. Whether you join in worship or come to look around, you'll find a warm welcome here - as well as the odd Archangel.

Norman in origin, the church was substantially rebuilt in 1451, with restorations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The chancel wagon roof carries great oak bosses - the tinners' hares, a green man and sacred monograms - and a Latin inscription by the first priest, Henry le Mayne of Normandy, recording that the rebuild was financed by Robert of Rouen de Becdenne, Prior of Cowick, and Richard Talbot, Lord of Spreyton. Uncle Tom Cobley is believed to be buried in the churchyard.

The parish is part of the North Dartmoor Parishes, welcoming people of all traditions and none.

Services

Regular Sunday morning services include Holy Communion, Celtic Morning Prayer and Sunday Worship - see the village calendar for dates and times. Festival services are an annual feature for the whole village: the Harvest Festival, the Candlelit Carol Service and the Nativity Procession.
